Kevin – COFCAWE, Uganda

Empowering women and upholding dignity.

Kevin was still in school when she became pregnant after a boy had deceived her. Her father was so angry that she ended up leaving home to live with and marry the boy. She gave birth to three children before the situation turned difficult and her husband eventually left her.

She returned to her parents who forgave her and took her in, but there were limited resources to care for ten children plus three of her own – until she came across the ‘SafePads’ initiative at the Concern for Children and Women Empowerment (COFCAWE). She began training in the production of SafePads, reuseable menstrual hygiene products designed to address period poverty in rural areas of Uganda, which earnt her a source of income for her and her family.

“I’m so proud that I’ve started to make the ‘SafePads’ – I think that they’re life-changing. I used to miss school during my period because I had no money for sanitary pads. Now I make pads for girls like me. They won’t need to miss school anymore. My dream is to grow, to one day open my own hub and be an example to others in my community.”
